Balin was started in 1974 by two surfers, Ian Brett and Jon Wilson, south of Melbourne Australia on the Mornington Peninsula. Their hobby turned into a business selling leashes and surfboards. Urethane legropes were an innovation at the time. Balin surf clothes appeared in the 1980s, combining function with fashion in clothing for surfers.
